Where safety at school is concerned, communication plays a vital role, especially for those sites with many buildings.
At this Primary School in Ryton, there was a need to put in place a robust lockdown system which would be capable of alerting all the employees.
The Challenge
Due to the enactment of Martyn’s Law which focused on protective security and emergency preparedness, the school needed to come up with an innovative way to improve the site security measures.
However, the design of the property was a major hindrance to their plans. This is because the school is based on a wide site, with several buildings and even nurseries; hence, there are issues concerning communication from one point to another.
A typical wired installation would pose some complications for the school and therefore, they required a product that can enable effective communication within the property without requiring extensive cabling.
Delivering the Solution
We offered an Alertex wireless lockdown solution, aimed at linking together the different parts of the premises belonging to Primary School.
The core of the system is based on a wireless mesh network through which any compatible device can pass the message to another device without having to communicate with the central point directly.
This was especially suitable for the location because the terrain was such that it might have posed a problem for communication to be established through the building.
In order to establish a proper communication channel, battery-operated wireless locking devices were put in place near both of the buildings as well as in the nursery area.
Simple, Accessible Lockdown Activation
As well as the wireless network, we provided master call points and portable lockdown fobs, which allowed authorised personnel easy access to trigger the alert mechanism.
With its wireless, battery-operated nature, the system was independent of the existing network facilities in the school, making the communication process more effective.
It should be mentioned that the technology works in combination with the existing emergency plans of the school, assisting staff in understanding their actions during a lockdown.
The Impact
The school currently reaps the benefits of a custom wireless lockdown system that has been engineered to address the needs of a multi-building environment.
The installation creates an integrated way of giving the lockdown alert message since all the buildings and the nursery are connected to one another via the wireless mesh network. It’s also a standalone network and does not depend on the IT network.
Thanks to master call points, lockdown fobs and procedures, the staff will be able to have a better way of dealing with the lockdown scenario.
